Chronological and geographic in scope, the exhibition will also provide a regional context for the nocturne theme-the subject with which Sotter is most often recognized-and will include nocturne subjects by many of his Bucks County artistic contemporaries as well as some from further afield.. ...Show Less

George Sotter (1879-1953), an artist strongly identified with Bucks County, Pennsylvania, is best known for his magical winter nocturnes, scenes made Show More...even more enchanting by the blanket of snow that is a recurring motif in his work. He was also well known for his work in stained glass. In addition to a significant investigation of Sotter's nocturnal landscapes, Light and Shadow will present the various other types of landscape he produced throughout his career, and will introduce his work as a stained-glass artist, and examine the artistic exchange between the media in which he worked. Join us on Saturday, August 19th at 2:00pm for a meet and greet with local artist and author Gene Rossi! Gene's watercolor paintings have been displayed Show More...at the Michener Art Museum in Doylestown. He is the author of Seventy One: Growing Up in Downtown Brooklyn During WW II and Joining It Before it Ended.
About Gene Rossi:
Born in Brooklyn and growing up in the city, Gene Rossi began cultivating his creativity and design sense at Pratt Institute while a high school senior. After serving in World War II in the Navy Air Force, Rossi went to Notre Dame University and received his BFA in 1949. Upon his graduation, Rossi moved back to New York and for the next year continued classes at Pratt in Advertising Design, thus beginning his 30-year career in the design industry. Some of his most notable designs have included the packaging for Nabisco, Huggies, and Buitoni. Rossi worked as a designer with three major New York design firms, the last being Raymond Loewy where he was the Design Director overseeing a staff of 25 artists.
Rossi's retirement in 1980 led him to Doylestown to pursue teaching and consulting. It was not until 2002 that he began painting in earnest. He believes that working as a designer for most of his life readied him to become a painter, for composition, rendering and drawing in graphic art and design are all equally relevant to painting. Painting primarily in city and genre scenes, Rossi describes his watercolor work in terms of style as somewhat loose, but not tight.
Since living in Doylestown, Rossi has taught Graphic Design at Tyler School of Art. His painting, Montauk Rendezvous, is in the permanent collection of the James A. Michener Art Museum.. ...Show Less

Young children might resist reading in a classroom...but put them in a room of cats, and everything changes. Suddenly the kids are reading and enjoying Show More...every minute of it! As for the cats, they lap up the attention.
This sweet scene unfolds twice a month at Tabby's Place: A Cat Sanctuary in Ringoes, NJ. In the sanctuary's Paws To Read program, kids ages 6-10 years read to needy cats. This benefits the children and cats. Kids who find it hard to read in front of people are happy to read to the cats. Meanwhile, the cats never judge their little friends, and they are very happy to have the company. It's a win-win.
It's a heartwarming scene to see kids snuggled up to cats, reading out loud to them. One mother burst into tears seeing her son reading to a cat, since he has completely refused to read otherwise. With his new cat friends, he is not only reading, but truly enjoying it.
Paws To Read is held the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month. If your child, age 6-10 years, would like to be a part of this program, please contact Karina Jewitt at kj@tabbysplace.org or (908)237-5300 x 605.
